Danger Signs to Watch For
Know these warning signs — they could save your life or a loved one's.
Tornado Warning Signs
  • Loud continuous roar like a freight train
  • Dark greenish or yellow-tinted sky
  • Large hail suddenly stops — a tornado may be forming
  • Rotating cloud base, wall cloud, or visible funnel
  • Debris cloud near the ground even without visible funnel
Action: Go to basement or interior room on lowest floor NOW. Cover your head with arms, pillows, or a helmet. Do NOT try to outrun it.
Destructive Straight-Line Winds
  • Trees bending, snapping, or being uprooted
  • Flying debris and projectiles
  • Sudden pressure changes (ears popping)
  • Windows shattering or doors blowing open
Action: Move away from windows to an interior room. Stay low. Straight-line winds over 100 mph can be as destructive as a tornado. Do not go outside.
Flash Flooding
  • Water rising rapidly in streets or underpasses
  • Water entering your home or building
  • Rushing water in normally dry areas
  • Debris floating in moving water
Action: Move to higher ground IMMEDIATELY. Do not walk, swim, or drive through flood water. 6 inches knocks you down, 2 feet sweeps away cars. Call 911 if trapped.
Downed Power Lines
  • Lines on ground or hanging low after storm passes
  • Sparking or arcing from damaged poles
  • Burning smell near electrical equipment
  • Buzzing or humming sounds near lines
Action: Stay at least 35 feet away. Call 911 and your utility company. Assume ALL lines are live. Do not touch anything in contact with the line — including fences and puddles.
